This proposal for Matraville Public Library emulates the contrasting elements within the suburb. The two very distinct forms symbolises these many contrasts. The orthogonal box is perceived as a strong, heavy object that includes many little cave-like negative spaces, while the free-form curvilinear object above is lightweight and has a completely open plan.

When one enters this library, they are automatically drawn towards the free-form element above as the natural light that enters the library only comes from above. The bottom level allows for easy access to books for pedestrians who come and go, while the upper level is intended for long stays within the library.
